ABOUT US

Protect Pacific Northwest is a non-profit advocating for the protection and preservation of our precious natural resources, waterways, open space, parks, forests and wildlife from urban sprawl and overdevelopment in the PNW.

“The larger question for the Northwest, where the cities are barely a hundred years old but contain three-fourths of the population, is whether the wild land can provide work for those who need it as their source of income without being ruined for those who need it as their source of sanity.”

    - Timothy Egan, The Good Rain: Across Time & Terrain in the Pacific Northwest

RESEARCH

Our team of experienced land use experts gathers the information regarding the development threat, including a clear understanding of the proposals implications on the surrounding environment. Protect Pacific Northwest outlines the entitlement process and where the public can participate.

ORGANIZING

Protect Pacific Northwest works with its members to build strong community coalitions to achieve their goals. In addition to the community impacted, we outreach to and work with key stakeholder groups ranging from local labor unions, clergy members, environmental groups, and social justice advocates.

LEGAL

Protect Pacific Northwest’s team of land use attorneys provides oversight and guidance in each campaign.

EDUCATE

We take the information obtained during the research phase and use it to assist our members in educating the broader public. People lead busy lives on a day-to-day basis and are often unaware of potential developments that will impact their quality of life. Protect Pacific Northwest is focused on keeping people informed so that they can make clear, informed decisions.

ADVOCATING

Citizens have a right to be informed on important decisions being made by their city, county and state governments. This is particularly true for proposed developments that too often go through the approval process without seeking community input. Community development departments and planning staff are given significant amounts of deference in deciding whether a proposed development project requires legislative action or not. The lack of legislative action means that citizens cannot voice their concerns or support for a project. Protect Pacific Northwest develops advocacy campaigns for its members and coalition groups targeting the key decision-makers. These campaigns are about transparency and getting voices heard.
